Black Trans Short Film Festival

Black Trans Short Film Festival

The future is something we create. At Comfrey Films, we are deeply committed to ensuring that Black Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming and Intersex (TGNCI) people are unforgettable for generations to come. For millennia, Black TGNCI people have been the ones to create our own systems of care and safety, making it possible for future generations of our community to exist and live with dignity.

The Comfrey Films Black Trans Short Film Festival is continuing that commitment to ensure that  Black TGNCI folks in the future know that we existed, stunningly, and with great courage.

From April 24-26, 2025, Comfrey Films will bring to life our very first Black Trans Short Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina. The Black Trans Short Film Festival will welcome narrative and non-fiction short films by Black TGNCI directors, producers, and screenwriters as an expansion of our incredibly powerful 2024 Black Trans Short Film Competition.

For filmmakers:

Thank you for submitting your incredible films! We’re so honored that you trusted us with your stories, and so grateful to be alive in a time where more and more Black TGNCI stories are making it to the big screen.

Our submissions are closed for this year’s festival and we’re in the jury deliberation phase. We’ll let you know if your film has been selected by February 28th. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at btsff@comfreyfilms.org.

BTSFF FAQs

  • The Black Trans Short Film Festival will welcome any narrative + non-fiction short films, solo projects and Black trans-led collaborations and be an expansion of our incredibly impactful 2024 Black Trans Short Film Competition. In 2024, a total of 22 powerful independent films were submitted by Black TGNCI creators, spanning a range of genres and deeply personal narratives that wove into stories about community organizing, grief, healing justice, sisterhood / siblinghood, personal identity, spirituality, and so much more. It became clear right away that this space was necessary to support the healing and transformative culture work that is happening in our communities--we are excited to bring this event back with an even more expansive vision as a 3-day Black Trans Short Film Festival in Durham, NC!
